Women’s Lacrosse Ends Season with Loss to Seton Hill in PSAC Quarterfinals

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Crimson Hawks used a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to one goal in the second half, but Seton Hill was too strong down the stretch as IUP dropped a 17-11 decision to the Griffins in the quarterfinals of the 2015 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Lacrosse Championships on Tuesday evening.

Brittney Palardy (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall) scored a team-high four goals while Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) dished out three assists for the Crimson Hawks, as they end their season with a 10-8 overall record. It was the fourth straight trip to the PSAC tournament for the program under head coach Mindy Richmond.

With Weinberg's three assists, she broke the program's career record with 138 assists, moving past the old mark of 137 held by Becca Vogt (2009-12).

Seton Hill (14-4) started by scoring the game's first four goals to take a lead just eight minutes into the opening draw. Weinberg stopped the run with an unassisted goal at the 22:25 mark, but the Griffins came back with three straight goals to take a 7-1 lead nearly the midway point.

Palardy netted her first goal of the game at 15:00, but Seton Hill scored back-to-back goals to take a 9-2 lead with six minutes to play before the break.

The Crimson Hawks began their rally with under three minutes to play, as Palardy, Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley) and Bailey McLeish (Courtice, Ontario/Anderson C.V.I) scored goals over a 1:34 time span to cut IUP's deficit to 9-5 heading into halftime.

The run continued for IUP as those same three players scored to begin the second half, making it a 9-8 game with 25:36 left to play in the game.

Seton Hill stopped IUP's run soon after, scoring six consecutive goals over an 8:41 span to open up a 15-8 lead with just over 12 minutes to play in the game.

The Crimson Hawks tried to rally again as Palardy and Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) scored back-to-back goals, but the Griffins answered with two of their own as they went on to secure the six-goal victory.

Seton Hill outshot the Crimson Hawks 34-to-22 on the day. IUP did grab more draw controls than Seton Hill (16-to-14) but turned the ball over 18 times compared to the Griffins' 13.

The four straight trips to the postseason are the only ones in IUP program history, including a pair of PSAC semifinal appearances by the Crimson Hawks in both 2013 and 2014. IUP also has a combed 47 wins over those four seasons.

The Crimson Hawks will expect everyone back in 2016 as there are no graduating seniors on this year's team. Weinberg entered the tournament as the leader in Division II in both assists and assists per game, and wraps up the year with a school record 67. Hooven had a team-high 52 goals, making it four straight years for IUP with a 50-goal scorer.

The PSAC will announce its postseason awards on Wednesday with all-region and national honors following in the coming weeks.
