DETROIT, Mich. – IUP's
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) took down a top-50 singles player but the 32nd-ranked Crimson Hawks fell to 27th-ranked Wayne State by a score of 7-2 in a non-conference women's tennis matchup on Friday afternoon.
Timko, the 46th-ranked player in Division II, rallied to defeat 49th-ranked Yasha Moore of Wayne State in three sets – 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Crimson Hawks' second victory also came in singles play, as
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) defeated Lauren Hughes 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Wayne State took a 3-0 lead after doubles play, getting wins of 8-4, 8-4 and 8-0 at the three spots, respectively. Timko and
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) fell to Moore and Anne Li Briand at one;
Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) and Wood lost to Alex Poissant and Liz Chellere at two; and
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) dropped their match at three to Ashley Walker and Lauren Hughes.
In other singles action, Petercakova lost to Andrea Mitrache 6-2, 6-2 at two and
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) fell to Poissant 6-2, 7-5 at three. Also dropping singles matches was Butland to Briand 6-1, 6-1 at four and Von Agris to Julia Kamenko 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 at five.
The Crimson Hawks dropped to 10-4 overall on the season as the loss ended their four-match win streak. It was the first of two matches against nationally-ranked opponents for IUP this weekend, with a matchup against 41st-ranked Grand Valley State on tap for Saturday. Start time is set for 11 a.m.
