Women’s Lacrosse Defeats East Stroudsburg for Fourth Straight Conference Win

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Kim Hooven (Malvern/Great Valley) tied a career-high with five goals as the Crimson Hawks outlasted East Stroudsburg 14-12 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) women's lacrosse matchup on Saturday afternoon.

It was IUP's fourth straight win, improving to 6-4 overall, and the Crimson Hawks are now fourth in the PSAC with a 4-1 league record.

The Crimson Hawks had catching up to do in the outset, as East Stroudsburg (5-4, 1-4) scored the first three goals of the game to take an early lead. Hooven and Bailey McLeish (Courtice, Ontario/Anderson C.V.I) scored IUP's first two goals, but the Warriors were able to keep a lead as both teams traded scores for most of the half.

As the first half was closing out, Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, MD/Atholton) found Hooven for back-to-back scores as the Crimson Hawks tied the game at 6-6 with 1:40 to play. The Warriors would go into the break with the lead, however, as Lauren Nunes scored with 12 seconds left to put ESU on top 7-6.

Nunes gave ESU a two-goal lead early in the second half with the first score of the final 30 minutes of play. The Warriors later led 9-7 when IUP made its move, going on a 4-0 run over an 8:03 span to go on top 11-9 with just over 12 minutes to play.

McLeish started the run with her second goal of the game at the 20:11 mark, and was followed by goals from Hooven, Brittany Palardy and Maddie Poehlman (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough (Howard C.C.)).

ESU twice made it a one-goal game until consecutive IUP goals by Tara Nicholas (Germantown, MD/Northwest) and Palardy made it a 14-11 difference with just under two minutes to play. The Warriors managed one more goal with 1:31 left, but IUP didn't allow them to get off another shot in the waning moments to secure the victory.

Along with Hooven's five, McLeish, Palardy and Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) each scored two goals for IUP. Hooven also picked up six ground balls while Palardy had four and Nicholas and McLeish had three each. McLeish and Palardy each caused two turnovers.

Three different goalies saw time in the net for IUP, with Sarah Knotts (Mount Airy, MD/Linganore) playing the entire second half. Knotts held ESU to five goals in the final 30 minutes and came up with six saves.

The Crimson Hawks will host Slippery Rock on Wednesday night in the Cathy Sterling Memorial Game. First draw is set for 7 p.m. at Miller Stadium.
