CLARION, Pa. –
Lexie Palluconi (Penfield, N.Y./Fairport)'s extra time goal gave IUP a 2-1 comeback victory over PSAC rival Clarion Saturday afternoon.
Palluconi's first goal of the season came 5:03 into extra time, giving IUP its first win of the year after battling Mercyhurst to a 0-0 tie in the season opener Thursday.
Neither team could get on the scoreboard in the first half, as IUP had numerous opportunities in the attacking end of the field, while taking eight corner kicks in the half. However, the Crimson Hawks could only muster up six shots, as both teams headed into halftime with the score deadlocked at 0-0.
Clarion got on the board first with a longe-range shot by Brieann Cook at the 74:33 mark as both teams turned up the offensive intensity. Of IUP goalkeeper
Jessica Printz (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson)'s seven saves, six came in the second half.
With just seven minutes remaining in the game, Palluconi got a pass to
Kiersten Zerbe (Danville, Pa. /Danville), who scored to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams had chances down the stretch to score, but saves by both goalkeepers kept things even and forced the extra time period.
Of IUP's 14 shots, 10 were on target. Ten different Crimson Hawks recorded shots, with Palluconi, Zerbe and
Mackenna Miller (Milton, Pa. /Milton) recording multiple tallies.
The Crimson Hawks get back on the field Thursday when the team hosts non-conference Ashland University. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at South Campus Field.
