Women’s Basketball Drops One-Point Overtime Decision at Pitt-Johnstown

Five players scored in double-figures - led by 21 points from Leslie Stapleton - but Pitt-Johnstown outscored IUP 52-42 in the second half and overtime for the comeback win.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Five players scored in double-figures for the Crimson Hawks, but it wasn't enough to stop the Pitt-Johnstown three-point attack as the IUP women's basketball team dropped an 87-86 road overtime conference game on Wednesday night.
 
The Crimson Hawks led by 16 in the fourth quarter, but a 20-4 run by Pitt-Johnstown in the final 7:12 tied the game and sent it to overtime.
 
Senior guard Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) nailed back-to-back three-pointers at the start of overtime to IUP lead for most of the extra period. Pitt-Johnstown tied the game at 86-86 on a three with 1:06 to play and took the lead with a free throw with 27.5 seconds on the clock.
 
IUP had two chances to take the lead in the final seconds, but both possessions ended without a bucket as Pitt-Johnstown came away with the upset victory.
 
The loss snaps IUP's seven-game win-streak, dropping the Crimson Hawks to 12-4 overall and 9-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). They remain in second place in the Western Division, one game ahead of California (Pa.).
 
Senior guard Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) finished with 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting, adding six rebounds in 44 minutes. Senior forward Zhané Brooks added 18 points, five rebounds and three assists while sophomore guard Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) tallied her second double-double of the year with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Also reaching double-figures were Wareham with 12 points and freshman guard Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) with 11 off the bench.
 
Pitt-Johnstown (7-10, 4-7 PSAC) shot 48.4 percent from the field and made 13-of-25 from three-point range, overcoming its 18 turnovers on the night. The Lady Cats outrebounded IUP 44-to-37.
 
The Crimson Hawks converted 42.1 percent from the field and made 15-of-17 from the foul line.
 
IUP will look to rebound from tonight's loss on Saturday with a home game against Clarion (6-12, 6-6). Tipoff at the Kovalchick Complex is set for 5:30 p.m.
