CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Senior guard
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) scored 21 points but it wasn't enough for the IUP women's basketball team as the Crimson Hawks fell to rival California (Pa.) 57-44 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Wednesday evening at the Convention Center.
The loss was just the second for the Crimson Hawks in their last 11 games as they fall to 14-5 overall and are now tied with Cal and Gannon for first in the PSAC Western Division with an 11-4 league record.
Stapleton played the entire 40 minutes to pick up her seventh 20-point performance of the year, including her fourth in the last five games. She finished 8-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-4 from three-point range. Stapleton also had three rebounds, three assists and a steal.
The Crimson Hawks received 10 points from Stapleton in the opening quarter as they took a 15-14 lead into the first break. Cal (13-5, 11-4 PSAC) took control in the second quarter, using an 8-0 run to outscore IUP 17-11 and take a 31-26 lead into halftime.
The Vulcans owned the third quarter, opening with a 15-5 run before extending their lead to 17 at 53-36 heading into the final 10 minutes of play. Back-to-back three-pointers by Stapleton cut Cal's lead to 11 with just under four minutes to play, but the Crimson Hawks went scoreless the rest of the way as the Vulcans closed out the double-digit win.
IUP shot 34 percent (17-of-50) from the floor and turned the ball over 21 times on the night. The Crimson Hawks went just 6-of-15 from the foul line.
Stapleton was the only player to reach double-figures for IUP, as senior forward Zhané Brooks added nine points and six rebounds and fellow senior frontcourt mate
Alexis Aiken (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Allegheny) added six points and seven boards.
The Crimson Hawks will have another tough test this weekend when they host Gannon (13-6, 11-4) at the Kovalchick Complex. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
