INDIANA, Pa. – Despite losing two of the first three sets, the Crimson Hawks bounced back to record a five-set victory over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Southwest division leading California (Pa.) at the Kovalchick Complex on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the IUP volleyball team improves to 16-6 overall and 7-4 in league play. Meanwhile, the Vulcans fall to 16-6 and 8-3 in conference competition.
California won the first set 30-28 while IUP evened the match at 1-1 with a 26-24 second-set victory. The Vulcans then won set three 25-20 before IUP came back and won the match with a 25-21 fourth-set win and a 15-13 victory in the decisive fifth-set.
Junior
Natalie Cignetti (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) hit a blistering .391 as she tallied 28 kills and 22 digs. It marked her 14th double-double of the year. Also tallying double digits in kills were
Alexis Anderson (Cleveland, Ohio/Mayfield) and
Lily McWilliams (Rockville, Md./Thomas Sprigg Wootton) who totaled 19 and 11 kills, respectively. The Crimson Hawks were able to limit the Vulcans to just a .171 hitting percentage while IUP hit at a .257 clip as a team.
Five Crimson Hawks totaled double digits in digs including Cignetti,
Breanna Damiani (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) (16),
Kaitlyn Palmer (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) (19),
Jess Marut (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) (23) and
Lindsay Moeller (Troy, Mich./Troy) (10). Moeller tallied her second 50 assist match as the senior recorded 56 helpers. Anderson also chipped in defensively with seven digs and two block assists.
IUP resumes PSAC play on Friday, October 28 when it hosts Shippensburg at 7 p.m.
