EDINBORO, Pa. – The IUP women's volleyball team earned its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament win since 2004 after upsetting No. 2 seed Edinboro 3-1 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday evening at McComb Fieldhouse.
After dropping the first set 25-22, IUP recorded wins of 27-25, 26-24 and 25-20 during the next three matches to advance to the PSAC semifinals for the first time since 2002.
With the win, the Crimson Hawks improve to 20-10 and reach the 20-win mark for the first time since 2012. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 23-8.
Junior
Natalie Cignetti (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) led the offense as she recorded a match-high 24 kills on 47 total attacks for a .404 hitting percentage. Senior
Lily McWilliams (Rockville, Md./Thomas Sprigg Wootton) recorded 11 kills while classmate
Kaitlyn Palmer (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) added 15 kills. Cignetti and Palmer each added three service aces.
Defensively, the Crimson Hawks were led by sophomore
Jess Marut (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) who totaled a match-high 26 digs. Senior
Lindsay Moeller (Troy, Mich./Troy) recorded 18 digs while McWilliams (15), Palmer (14) and Cignetti (12) each tallied double-digit dig totals. Moeller also added 47 assists.
Offensively, the Fighting Scots were led by a team-high 15 kills from both Victoria Severo and Latoya Hutchinson. Megan Screptock tallied 20 digs while Jordan Von Oss and Challen Litwiler each added 14 digs. Sydney Trathen totaled a match-high 52 assists.
IUP continues PSAC tournament play when it squares off against third seed Pitt-Johnstown at Gannon on Saturday at 5 p.m.
