INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games with an 81-46 victory over Ohio Valley in its final non-conference contest on Monday evening at the Kovalchick Complex.
With the win, the Crimson Hawks improve to 7-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 4-6 on the season.
Junior
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) scored a game-high 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting to go along with four rebounds, two blocks and one assist. Redshirt sophomore
Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic) added 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Sophomore
Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) chipped in with 11 points, four assists and three steals while sophomore
Kendall Hunter (Burke, Va. /Paul VI Catholic) scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
IUP opened the game on a 10-2 run over the first three minutes after a pair of Appleby free-throws. The Crimson Hawks held the Fighting Scots to just 1-of-5 from the floor during the run. Ohio Valley cut the lead to 10-6 on a Cydney Franklin jumper before IUP answered with an 8-2 run to push the lead to 18-6 at the 1:27-mark of the first quarter.
The Fighting Scots countered with a 10-4 run over a 5:05 stretch that cut the Crimson Hawks lead to 22-16 at the 6:22- mark of the second quarter. IUP quickly pushed the lead back to 11 (27-16) with layups from
Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) and Smith midway through the second quarter. An Appleby three-pointer extended the IUP lead to 36-18 and highlighted an 11-2 run.
In the third quarter Ohio Valley pulled to within 12 at 42-30 before Smith converted a traditional three-point play minutes later to put IUP ahead 48-30 at the 5:58-mark. The Crimson Hawks then maintained a sizeable lead entering the fourth quarter.
IUP pushed the lead to 60-38 on a layup from
Ana Hollen (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood) just ten seconds into the fourth quarter. The Crimson Hawks then put the game out of reach with a 14-6 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from
Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic), to take a 74-44 lead at the 4:03-mark. IUP made 6-of-9 from the floor, including two three-pointers, during the run while holding Ohio Valley to just 2-of-9 from the field.
Ohio Valley was led by Franklin's team-high 12 points while Ariel Johnson added 10 points.
The Crimson Hawks had 21 assists on 31 made baskets while shooting at a 44.3 percent (31-of-70) clip compared to just 25.9 percent (15-of-58) for Ohio Valley. IUP held a 47-35 rebounding edge while also outscoring the Ohio Valley bench by a 29-14 margin.
