GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Crimson Hawks opened the match by sweeping the doubles portion as IUP defeated Denison 8-1 at the Greensburg Racquet Club on Friday night.
The victory was the first dual win of the year for the Crimson Hawks as they opened their spring season against the Big Red.
Picking up the double wins for IUP were
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) 8-4 at number one,
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) at
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) 8-4 at number two, and
Claudia Menes (Spain/San Eutiquio) and
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) 8-5 at number three.
Petercakova started singles play off with a 6-0, 6-4 victory the number one spot. Von Agris followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win at number five, Wood gave IUP a 6-0 lead in the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at six, and Menes won 6-1, 6-4 in the fourth slot.
Denison picked up its only point of the night by default over Butland at three. Butland dropped the first set 7-5 and was down 3-0 in the second. Gonzalez finished things off with a comeback 4-6, 7-6, 10-8 victory at number two.
The Crimson Hawks continue their spring season next weekend with a pair of indoor matches in Ohio, first against Oberlin on Friday followed by Tiffin on Saturday morning.
