Bats Come Alive for Crimson Hawks in Friday Split with St. Joseph and Bloomsburg

Nine different players tallied hits for the Crimson Hawks, including three each by Hunter Bigler, Rick Jones, Wes Carson, and Chris Schaedel.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Crimson Hawks belted out 19 hits en route to a 19-3 blowout win over the College of St. Joseph, highlighting their Friday afternoon on day two of the Apprentice School's 2016 Builder Invitational. IUP ended the night with a tight 4-2 loss to Bloomsburg.
 
Right hander Michael Klingensmith (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) picked up the win against St. Joseph as he struck out five batters and gave up just two earned runs on five hits in six full innings of work.
 
Nine different players tallied hits for the Crimson Hawks, including three each by Hunter Bigler (Washington/Trinity), Rick Jones (New Castle/Laurel), Wes Carson (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge), and Chris Schaedel (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier). Bigler scored three runs and had a double, while Jones reached base six times and teamed up with Chris Calliari (Brockway/Brockway) for back-to-back homers. Carson doubled twice and drove in four runs and Schaedel reached base four times, drove in a run and scored twice.
 
Ted DeSanti (Erie/Erie Cathedral Prep) drove in two of his three RBI with a double and Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler) had a two-run homer in his only at-bat of the game.
 
The Crimson Hawks scored in each of the first four innings, going for three each in innings one and two before exploding for five in the third and six in the fourth. They added two more in the sixth and Colin Claus (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) tossed a scoreless seventh to close out the shortened game.
 
Stats and details for the Bloomsburg game were not available at the time of release.
 
IUP (2-5) is back in action tomorrow with a nine inning game against tournament host the Apprentice School. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
