INDIANA, Pa. – A second-half run and senior guard
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic)'s career night propelled IUP past visiting Edinboro, 73-60, Saturday at the Kovalchick Complex.
With the victory, IUP stays in second place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with a 13-5 division record and 16-6 overall record. Edinboro falls to 11-7 and 16-8 overall.
Wareham scored 24 points and connected on 6-of-8 three-point field goals, both career-highs. The six shots from distance also ties the mark of second most in IUP history for three-pointers made in a game.
Senior forward Zhané Brooks completed her seventh double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. She also dished out three assists and had two steals.
Sophomore guard
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) also scored 14 points and pulled down five rebounds.
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) scored 10 points and in the process knocked down her 200th career three-pointer as a Crimson Hawk.
IUP trailed 30-23 with 3:22 left in the second quarter, before Wareham and freshman guard
Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) hit back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to extend the Crimson Hawks' 10-0 run. Edinboro scored just before the buzzer, as IUP went into the halftime leading, 33-32.
Out of the locker room, IUP continued on to a 12-0 run to go up 45-32. The Crimson Hawks defense held Edinboro scoreless for the first 3:21 of the second half. From then on, the Crimson Hawks never let up, outscoring Edinboro 40-28 in the second half.
IUP has now won nine straight home games and are 11-1 overall in the friendly confines of the Kovalchick Complex.
The Crimson Hawks return to action Wednesday at Clarion for a quick two-game road trip. Tipoff Wednesday is set for 5:30 p.m.
