Big Game from Brooks Pushes IUP into PSAC Semifinals

Brooks gets her 10th double-double of the year as the Crimson Hawks advance to the PSAC semifinals for the second straight year.

INDIANA, Pa. – Behind a monster double-double by senior Zhané Brooks, IUP advances to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference semifinals after defeating Gannon, 75-70, Tuesday night.

The Crimson Hawks, who clinched their second-consecutive 20-win season and second-straight appearance in the PSAC tournament semifinals, play West Chester Saturday at California (Pa.). IUP is now 20-7 on the season.

Brooks finished the game with a game-high 25 points and added 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season. For her career, she now has 13 double-doubles.

IUP jumped out of the gate to an 8-0 lead en route to a 36-27 advantage going into the locker room at halftime. Brooks scored 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including a perfect 7-of-7 effort from the free throw line in the first half.

After falling behind briefly in the third quarter, senior guard Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 42. Senior point guard Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) and Stapleton hit back-to-back 3's to get IUP back in the lead at 48-44 midway through the third quarter.

In the fourth, Gannon got within one point at 56-55, but sophomore guard Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) drained a shot from deep to widen the gap to four, as Gannon failed to close the gap the remainder of the game. Smith finished the day with 16 points, six rebounds and two blocks

Wareham finished the game with 17 points, three assists and three rebounds, while Stapleton scored 14 points and had two 3-pointers. Stapleton has made a 3-pointer in 25 of IUP's 27 games this year.

Tuesday marked the seventh time Brooks, Stapleton, Wareham and Smith each scored in double-figures. The Crimson Hawks have a 6-3 record when that fete happens.

Saturday's game against West Chester is set for a time to be determined later.
