Calliari Hits Two Homers, Drives in Eight Runs but IUP is swept in Erie

ERIE, Pa. – IUP outfielder Chris Calliari (Brockway, Pa./Brockway) hit a grand slam and drove in eight runs in the opener, but the Crimson Hawks dropped both ends of a doubleheader with Gannon, 17-11 and 8-7, on Thursday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium.

Calliari finished the opener 3-for-3 with a double and two home runs, walking once and scoring twice. It's the second straight year that IUP has had a slugger drive in eight runs in a single game, as Calliari joins former All-American Ryan Uhl (St. Marys, Pa./St. Marys) who had eight RBI against UPJ last April 12.

The games were the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division openers for both teams, as IUP falls to 6-12 on the year and 0-2 in the division. Gannon is now 14-5 and 2-0.

These two teams will meet again on Saturday, with the Crimson Hawks hosting Gannon at Owen Dougherty Field. The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.

Calliari's grand slam was part of a seventh inning attempted comeback by the Crimson Hawks, as they scored seven runs in the top of the final stanza. IUP's 17-4 deficit heading into the inning was too much, however, as Gannon closed out the high-scoring, six-run win.

The Crimson Hawks totaled 13 hits in the opener, but their four errors led to five Gannon unearned runs.

In game two, IUP held leads of 5-1 in the fifth and 7-5 in the seventh, but three runs on two hits by Gannon in the bottom half of the final inning – including a walk off double – gave the Golden Knights the victory.

With the game tied at 5-5 heading to the seventh, the Crimson Hawks put together a two-out rally with back-to-back run-scoring singles from Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York) and Rick Jones (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) to take a 7-5 lead into the bottom. With one out, Gannon drew a pair of walks before scoring one run on a single and two more on a double to get the Thursday sweep.

Sepic took the role of IUP's slugger in game two, going 3-for-3 with a double and home run, driving in four runs while walking once and scoring twice.
