No. 38 Women’s Tennis Blanks West Liberty, Wins Seventh Straight

WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – The IUP women's tennis team kept its undefeated streak going, improving to 7-0 on the year with a perfect 9-0 win at West Liberty in an Atlantic Region matchup on Friday afternoon.
 
The match was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved up one day due to inclement weather predicted for the area.
 
The seven-match win streak is the best to start the season in recent program history and is also the most consecutive victories since winning 14 straight during the spring of 2013. West Liberty falls to 10-6 overall.
 
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium), the 18th-ranked doubles team in the nation, won 3-0 at the first spot after the West Liberty pairing of Raquel Cabero and Rhiannon James retired due to injury. Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) picked up the 8-1 win at two while Claudia Menes (Spain/San Eutiquio) and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) won 8-3 at the third spot.
 
In singles play, Petercakova easily won 6-0, 6-1 at her usual No. 1 spot and Gonzalez was victorious at two by a score of 6-4, 6-1. Von Agris took the third spot 6-2, 6-4 while Menes won 7-5, 6-3 at four and Wood won 6-1, 6-0 at five. The victory for Wood was her seventh straight and ninth in her last 10 overall. McFail wrapped things up with a 6-0, 6-3 win at six.
 
The Crimson Hawks will host Chestnut Hill in their home opener next Thursday. Opening serve at the Maple Street Courts is set for 2 p.m.
