Box ScoreWEXFORD, Pa. – With three straight singles wins, the 36th-ranked IUP women's tennis team rallied for a 5-4 victory over 45th-ranked Chestnut Hill on Friday afternoon indoors at the Oxford Athletic Club.
The Crimson Hawks picked up their three consecutive wins at the fifth, fourth and the clincher by
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) at the sixth spot to improve to 9-0 on the season.
The win was also the third this spring for IUP over a fellow Division II top-50 team, as Chestnut Hill came into the match ranked 45th in Division II. Chestnut Hill dropped to 11-6 on the year.
Chestnut Hill jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with the Crimson Hawks picking up an 8-1 win by
Claudia Menes (Spain/San Eutiquio) and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) at the third spot. IUP then tied things up with the first decision in singles action with
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) securing a 6-4, 6-1 win at three.
After falling behind 3-2, the Crimson Hawks reeled off those three straight wins, with Menes starting things with a 6-1, 6-1 win at five.
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win at four before Wood clinched the match victory by winning 6-2, 6-1 at six.
The Crimson Hawks get back to conference play next Tuesday when they host Clarion at the Maple Street Courts.
