INDIANA, Pa. –
Matt Douglas (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) struck out 10 in a complete game win and
Jeff Allen (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area) fanned nine in just over five innings, helping IUP to a home doubleheader baseball sweep of Clarion at Dougherty Field on Saturday afternoon.
Douglas scattered four hits, giving up two earned runs and walking one while striking out a season-high 10 batters in IUP's 6-2 game one win.
Allen got the game two start, giving up five hits and walking four while giving up two earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. His nine strikeouts counted as the third start of at least eight this year, and his second most since fanning 10 Seton Hill batters on Feb. 19.
Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York) had the win in relief, striking out three in 1.2 innings in the Crimson Hawks' 7-6 comeback game two win.
IUP scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of that game two victory, including the two-run walk-off single off the bat of
Chris Calliari (Brockway, Pa./Brockway). The base hit scored
Christian McClure (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) from third and Sepic from second, as the Crimson Hawks completed the comeback as they found themselves down 6-4 entering the final inning.
Anthony Rigous (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) drove in the first run of the inning, as his double to left center brought in
Chris Schaedel (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier).
The Crimson Hawks had 12 total hits in the game two win, including two each from
Hunter Bigler (Washington, Pa./Trinity),
Matt Eperesi (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Mars), and Sepic.
IUP scored two in the second and fourth innings, but Clarion took the 6-4 lead into the seventh by scoring runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth.
In the opener, the Crimson Hawks gave Douglas good run support by scoring all of their six runs in the first four innings. Clarion managed one run in both the third and fourth innings, but Douglas shut down any Golden Eagles' offensive advance in his best outing of the spring.
Sepic was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI in the opener.
Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler) had two hits, including his second triple of the week.
IUP, now 10-15 on the year and 3-5 in the PSAC West, has a four-game series with Slippery Rock next weekend.
