Softball Bounces Back with Road Doubleheader Sweep of Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Brooke Darling (Springville, Pa./Elk Lake) tossed a complete game shutout in the nightcap and Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) had four total hits as the IUP softball team swept Seton Hill in a road doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

The Crimson Hawks used a seven-run seventh inning in game one to clinch a 10-4 victory while Darling completely shut down the Seton Hill offense in a 3-0 game two win.

IUP improved to 13-9 overall while Seton Hill fell to 10-16.

Darling struck out eight batters and gave up just two hits and one walk in the seven-inning victory. She struck out three in the first inning and allowed just one baserunner in the final three innings to clinch the win.

IUP had all of its scoring in the first two innings, starting with a sacrifice fly from Laura Cotter (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) following a Mercer leadoff double in the first inning. Rachel Francis (Jefferson, Ohio/Jefferson) led off the second with a double, and would then score on a single by Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights), who moved all the way around the bases when Seton Hill decided to throw the ball around to make it 3-0.

In the opener, IUP and Seton Hill took a 3-3 tie into the seventh inning before the Crimson Hawks exploded for seven runs in the top half. The first run came across the board when Allison Viguers (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) forced a bases loaded walk, which was followed by a double by Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona), scoring two runs.

After another bases loaded walk, this one drawn by Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights), Francis scored two on a single down the left field line and Bryanna Lonick (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) brought in a final run on a ground out.

Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) tossed a complete game in the circle, giving up three earned runs in victory.

The Crimson Hawks are on the road this weekend, heading to Clarion on Friday for a PSAC Central Division doubleheader against the Golden Eagles.
