Softball Opens Season with Pair of Friday Night Victories

Freshman Lauren Zola gave up just two hits and struck out seven batters in the seven inning, 4-0 win over Saint Rose in the opener. The right-hander gave up one hit in the third and seventh innings and stranded five Saint Rose runners on base.

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Crimson Hawks hit four home runs and received a complete game shutout from true freshman Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, PA/Seton-La Salle) as IUP softball opened its 2016 with a pair of wins over the College of Saint Rose and Cedarville on Friday night at The Spring Games at Hancock Park.

Zola gave up just two hits and struck out seven batters in the seven inning, 4-0 win over Saint Rose in the opener. The right-hander gave up one hit in the third and seventh innings and stranded five Saint Rose runners on base.

The game was scoreless through four until Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) led off the top of the fifth with a solo homer down the left field line. IUP then gave Zola a little bit of breathing room in the seventh, including a pinch hit triple by Laura Cotter (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny) that scored both Fairman and Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Oh/Cuyahoga Heights).

The Crimson Hawks' offense took off against Cedarville, eight-running the Yellow Jackets with an 11-3 five-inning victory. IUP scored in four of the five innings, plating four runs in both the second and fourth innings.

Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg Area) put the first runs on the board with a two-run shot over the center field fence in the first inning. Mackenna Miller (Milton, Pa. /Milton), Laura Cotter (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny), Alaina Montgomery (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) and Goetz each scored in the second, with RBIs by Mercer and Allison Viguers (West Chester/West Chester East).

Mercer knocked in another run in the fourth, but the highlight of the inning was a three-run blast by Rachel Francis (Jefferson, OH/Jefferson) that gave the Crimson Hawks a 10-3 lead.

With two outs in the fifth, Goetz ended the game with the mercy rule on a walk-off solo shot to right center field.

Brooke Darling (Springville, PA/Elk Lake) picked up the win in the circle, giving up three earned runs and striking out four over four innings. Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, IN/Cathedral) entered in the fifth, tossing an inning of shutout softball.

IUP is back in action on Saturday with games against Minnesota State-Mankato at 1 p.m. and Dowling at 3 p.m.
