Darling, Spindler Pitch IUP Past Lock Haven in Doubleheader Split

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – IUP pitchers Brooke Darling and Amanda Spindler shut down Lock Haven's offense in a 9-2 game two victory, helping the Crimson Hawks to a key divisional doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon. Lock Haven won the opening game in 10 innings by a score of 2-1.

This wraps up the regular season series between these two teams as they split the four games. The Crimson Hawks are now 19-13 overall on the year and in third place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division with a 6-6 record.

Lock Haven is 24-10 and sits in second place with 7-3 mark in the division.

Darling started the nightcap and went 6.0 innings, striking out five batters while giving up two hits and one earned run to pick up the win. Spindler entered in the seventh and put Lock Haven down 1-2-3, fanning the final two batters to secure the dominant seven-run victory.

Hannah Mercer, Mackenna Miller, and Lauren Goetz each had two hits in game two. Mercer smashed a two-run home run to center in the fourth and Goetz gave IUP an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI double.

IUP scored three runs in the third inning after making some key base running plays, as Miller and Goetz were each credited with stealing home while Mercer crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The Crimson Hawks scored three more runs in the fourth and two in the fifth inning to take an 8-2 lead to the seventh before Goetz and Spindler put their stamps on the victory.

Game one was a pitcher's duel, with Lauren Zola taking the loss in the circle despite striking out eight and allowing one earned run on six hits in 9.1 innings. Mercer brought home Taylor Mercurio with a double in the third for the game's first run, with Lock Haven tying things up in the fourth on an RBI single. The Bald Eagles hit the game-winning single with one out in the 10th after a runner was placed on second to start the inning.

The Crimson Hawks had plenty of chances to score, leaving a combined six runners stranded over the final six innings.

IUP looks head to three doubleheaders this week, including PSAC Central contests against Clarion on Friday and at Bloomsburg on Saturday. The Crimson Hawks also head to Shippensburg on Wednesday.
