WEXFORD, Pa. – After suffering their first loss of the year on Saturday, the 36th-ranked IUP women's tennis team took down Wayne State (Mich.) by a score of 7-2 indoors at the Oxford Athletic Club on Sunday.
The IUP win followed a 7-2 loss at the hands of 30th-ranked Grand Valley State on Saturday. The Crimson Hawks are now 14-1 overall on the season.
More impressive is that Wayne State was coming off of a 6-3 victory over NYIT, which is ranked 13th in Division II by the ITA. The Warriors fell to 17-10 overall with today's loss.
The Crimson Hawks set the tone in doubles play, with the 21st-ranked pairing of
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) scoring an 8-3 victory at the number one spot.
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) followed with an 8-6 win at two, as IUP took a 2-1 lead over Wayne State heading to singles action.
IUP rattled off five singles wins, including Petercakova and von Agris posting 6-3, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-4 victories at the first and second spots, respectively.
Claudia Menes (Spain/San Eutiquio) won 6-4, 6-2 at four; Wood rallied for a three-set 6-7, 6-0, 10-5 win at five; and McFail picked up a 7-6, 6-2 win at six.
The Crimson Hawks return to conference play on Tuesday with their biggest match of the season at home against 18th-ranked and nine-time PSAC champion California (Pa.). First serve from the Maple Street Courts is scheduled for 4 p.m.
