WASHINGTON, Pa. –
Scott Hess (Erie, Pa./Erie Cathedral Prep) went 4-for-5 with three doubles, a home run, and drove in five runs, helping IUP baseball to a doubleheader split with California (Pa.) at CONSOL Energy Park on Friday afternoon. The Vulcans took game one 10-5 while IUP rallied for a 9-8 game two win in eight innings.
The Crimson Hawks wrapped up the day with a 16-21 overall record and still in fifth place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with an 8-10 league record. Cal is now 20-14 with a 13-5 PSAC record, good for third in the division.
Hess also drew three walks in the doubleheader, as he reached base seven total times on Friday. Two of his doubles came in the opener, before hitting a first inning homer, another double, and driving in four runs in the game two win.
Rick Jones (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) also hit a round tripper for the Crimson Hawks, going yard in the second inning of game one.
Christian McClure (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) got the start in the opener, striking out six in five innings, giving up seven hits and five runs, just one earned. The Vulcans took a 5-2 lead into the sixth, where IUP tied the game with RBI singles by
Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York) and Jones. Cal then came back with five runs in the bottom half and ended up with the 10-5 win.
IUP held a lead for most of game two, going on top 4-0 after two innings on run-scoring extra-base hits from Sepic (triple), Hess (homer) and
Wes Carson (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge) (double). After Cal took an 8-7 lead in the sixth,
Ted DeSanti (Erie, Pa./Erie Cathedral Prep) tied the score when he crossed home plate on a wild pitch in the seventh. The Crimson Hawks then took a 9-8 lead in the eighth, taking advantage of a two-out error by Cal.
Sepic picked up the win on the mound on five innings of relief work, giving up three hits and two earned with two strikeouts.
The two teams finish up their series at Dougherty Field in Indiana on Saturday. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
