CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The 36th-ranked IUP women's tennis team improved to 16-2 on the season with an easy 9-0 win over regionally-ranked Charleston in West Virginia on Saturday morning.
The shutout victory was the seventh of the season for the Crimson Hawks, who also improved to 7-1 against Atlantic Regionally-ranked teams. Charleston, which is ranked fifth in the region by both the ITA and the NCAA, fell to 15-6 overall.
IUP breezed through doubles play, leading off with an 8-3 win at the top spot by 21st-ranked
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium).
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) won 8-2 at the second spot while
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and
Claudia Menes (Spain/San Eutiquio) won 8-1 at three.
In singles play, Wood won 6-0, 6-2 at five followed by a 6-2, 6-0 win by McFail at six. Petercakova dispatched Toni Katipa, the 13th-ranked player in the region, 6-3, 6-2 at one while Menes went the distance at four by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 10-5.
Von Agris and Butland wrapped up the win with wins of 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) and 6-3, 6-2 at two and three, respectively.
The victory was a precursor to Sunday's big match with West Virginia State, which is ranked second in the Atlantic Region by the NCAA and fourth by the ITA.
