Softball Drops a Pair of Close Games at Division-Leading Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -  IUP picked up two good outings from pitchers Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) and Brooke Darling (Springville, Pa./Elk Lake), but the Crimson Hawks' offense mustered three total runs as Bloomsburg swept a PSAC Central doubleheader by scores of 4-3 and 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Zola struck out seven and scattered five hits in 6.2 innings of work in the game one loss, giving up four earned runs to the top offense in the division. Darling followed by giving up just four hits and one earned run, striking out seven in six innings in the game two loss.

The Crimson Hawks fall to 21-17 overall and 8-8 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central. Bloomsburg improved to 35-4 overall and 16-0 in the league.

IUP took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning of game one, getting an RBI double from Mackenna Miller (Milton, Pa. /Milton) and a sacrifice fly from Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights). The Huskies came back with one run in the bottom half, as Zola pitched out of trouble to keep the one-run lead.

Zola faced just seven batters in the fifth and sixth innings, cruising through the Bloomsburg lineup, until a pair of two-out walks in the seventh led to the game-winning double and the 4-3 Huskies' win.

Bloomsburg scored a run in each of the first two innings of the second game before Darling settled in and retired 12 straight between the third and sixth innings. The Crimson Hawks managed just three hits after the second inning, including two in the seventh inning as the put a pair of runners in scoring position before Bloomsburg retired the final batter.

IUP heads into the final week of its regular season, traveling to Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday before finishing up doubleheaders with Mercyhurst, UPJ and Mansfield the following three days.
