Crimson Hawks Dominate in a Clash of Region’s Top Two Teams

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – In a match that was never close, the 36th-ranked IUP women's tennis team flew past West Virginia State by a score of 8-1 on Sunday afternoon.
 
The match featured the top two teams in the Atlantic Region according to the latest NCAA regional rankings released last week. The Crimson Hawks entered as the top-ranked team while West Virginia State is ranked second.
 
It was the second win in as many days in the state of West Virginia for IUP, which shutout Charleston 9-0 on Saturday. They improved to 17-2 overall while West Virginia State fell to 15-2. It was the Yellow Jackets first Division II loss of the season.
 
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) had her third straight win over a regionally-ranked opponent this week, defeating Brittany Franco 6-4, 6-3. Franco entered as the third-ranked player in the Atlantic while Petercakova is ranked sixth.
 
Her singles win highlighted a straight sweep, as the Crimson Hawks took each of the six singles matchups in two sets. Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) also defeated a ranked opponent, defeating Laura Isbey 7-5, 6-0. Isbey is ranked 20th in the region and von Agris is ranked ninth.
 
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) won 6-3, 6-2 at the three spot while Claudia Menes (Spain/San Eutiquio) won her fourth straight match, a 6-2, 6-2 win at four. Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) picked up a 6-0, 6-4 win at five and Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) won 6-2, 6-2 at the six spot.
 
West Virginia State picked up an upset win at the top doubles spot, as 21st-ranked Petercakova and von Agris fell 9-7. Wood and McFail balanced out the loss with a 9-7 win at two and Butland and Menes teamed for an 8-2 win at three.
 
IUP has two more regular season matches before the PSAC tournament. The Crimson Hawks will head to Lewisburg to face Bucknell on Tuesday and play at Edinboro on Friday.
