LEWISBURG, Pa. – The IUP women's tennis team upped its competition on Tuesday, facing off against Division I Bucknell on the road, but fell to the Bison by a score of 6-1.
The Crimson Hawks, who schedule a yearly match with a Division I opponent, fell to 17-3 overall as they head into their final regular season match of the season. Bucknell, which earned the fourth seed in the upcoming Patriot League Championships, improved to 14-8 on the season.
IUP played all three doubles spots tough, as the Crimson Hawks' top team of
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) defeated Maria Cioffi and Michele Urbinati by a score of 6-4. At No. 2,
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) fell by a score of 6-4 while
Claudia Menes (Spain/San Eutiquio) and
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) lost 7-5 at No. 3.
With two doubles wins, the Bison were awarded one point in accordance to Division I scoring rules.
Menes picked up IUP's lone singles win, rallying for a three-set win over Madeline Melch at the four spot. After dropping the opening set 4-6, Menes came back with convincing wins of 6-1 and 6-0.
The Crimson Hawks wrap up their regular season at Edinboro on Friday. Already earning the number two seed in the PSAC West in next week's conference tournament, IUP will host three seed Mercyhurst next Tuesday.
