No. 20 Crimson Hawks drop Four Overtime Thriller to No. 6 Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Goalkeeper Angela Lontoc (Columbus, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) saved four shots and the No. 20 Crimson Hawks came back from a four-goal second-half deficit, but IUP couldn't find an overtime goal, losing to No. 6 Lock Haven, 10-9, in four overtimes Saturday.

Down 8-4 with 14:42 left in regulation, junior midfielder Kim Hooven (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) scored her 20th goal of the season to get IUP within three goals of the Bald Eagles. After back-and-forth goals by both teams, IUP's Tara Nicholas (Germantown, Md./Northwest), Brittney Palardy (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) and Adriana Greco (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point) scored three unanswered goals in a seven-minute span late in the half to send the game to overtime.

Neither team could find much offense in any of the three-minute overtime periods, until Lock Haven scored a goal with 1:25 remaining in the fourth overtime. The Crimson Hawks had no answer and dropped the team's first PSAC contest of the year, falling to 7-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Junior midfielder Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) got IUP on the scoreboard first with an early goal, but Lock Haven then ripped off six-straight goals to go up 6-1. Nicholas scored with three seconds left in the first half to shrink IUP's deficit to 7-3 going into halftime.

In the second half, Greco opened the scoring for both teams by netting her 23rd goal of the year to get IUP within three at 7-4, setting up the late comeback by the Crimson Hawks.

Senior Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, Md./Atholton) finished with two assists, while Nicholas, Greco and Palardy each scored two goals apiece. Hooven, Smith and sophomore Bailey McLeish (Courtice, Ontario/Anderson C.V.I) each scored one goal, while Palardy had five draw controls and Weinberg four.

For the game, IUP continuously peppered the Lock Haven defense, holding a 34-19 advantage in shots, with a 26-14 margin on shots on goal. In the second half, IUP outshot Lock Haven by 17, 21-4.

The Crimson Hawks return to action Wednesday for a road contest at Slippery Rock. Action begins at 5 p.m.
