EDINBORO, Pa. – In their final tune-up before postseason play begins next week, the 36th-ranked IUP women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory at Edinboro on Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson Hawks finished their regular season with an 18-3 overall record, including a 5-1 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division.
They've already locked up the No. 2 seed in the division in next week's PSAC tournament and will host No. 3 seed Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
IUP won all three doubles matches, including an 8-3 win at number one by 21st-ranked
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium).
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) teamed for an 8-5 win at the second spot while
Claudia Menes (Spain/San Eutiquio) and
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) won 8-4 at three.
In singles play, Petercakova, von Agris and Gonzalez took two-set wins at each of the first three spots, respectively. Petercakova won 6-0, 6-2 at one, von Agris 6-0, 6-4 at two, and Gonzalez 6-1, 6-2 at three. Menes was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at five and McFail rallied for a 2-6, 6-0, 10-4 victory at six.
The Crimson Hawks are making their sixth straight PSAC championships appearance and their 11th since 2011.
