INDIANA, Pa. -
Claudia Menes defeated Mercyhurst's Kayla Frost at the fifth singles spot to help IUP clinch a 5-1 win over the Lakers in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Tennis Championships on Wednesday afternoon at the Maple Street Courts.
Menes beat Frost, the 12th-ranked player in the Atlantic Region, by a score of 6-0, 6-3. Menes is ranked ninth in the region.
The Crimson Hawks now advance to the semifinals where they will face PSAC East Champion West Chester on Friday in Bloomsburg.
IUP grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles play, starting with an 8-6 victory at the No. 1 spot from
Jarka Petercakova and
Luise von Agris over Adrianna Jeffress and Frost. Menes and
Raquel Gonzalez then teamed at three for an 8-3 win before
Rachel Wood and
Alanna McFail were edged at two by a score of 8-4.
In singles action, von Agris picked up the first win, defeating Jeffress 6-1, 6-1 at the two spot. Gonzalez quickly followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win at three before Menes' match-clinching win.
Friday's semifinal match is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Bloomsburg's courts. The winner will advance to Saturday's PSAC championship match.
