ERIE, Pa. – The 2016 IUP baseball season ended on Saturday, as the Crimson Hawks were swept by Mercyhurst in Erie by scores of 5-0 and 14-2.
The Crimson Hawks end their season with a 20-28 overall record and a 12-16 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division. The 12-16 divisional record put IUP in fifth place in the West, one spot out of the PSAC tournament. Mercyhurst clinched the division title at 36-10 and 23-5.
Rick Jones (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) went a combined 4-for-5 in the doubleheader, with three hits coming in game two, including a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning.
Michael Klingensmith (Punxsutawney, Pa./Punxsutawney) and
Jeff Allen (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area) took the losses on the mound for the Crimson Hawks. Klingensmith struck out seven in the full six innings of game one, giving up eight hits and three earned runs.
The losses end the college careers of
Hunter Bigler (Washington, Pa./Trinity),
Matt Douglas (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), Jones, and
Chris Schaedel (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier), who were all honored during IUP's Senior Day on Friday.
