MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Crimson Hawks' 13-match win streak came to an end on Saturday, as 36th-ranked IUP fell to 30th-ranked Grand Valley State 7-2 at Monroeville's Club Sport and Health.
It's IUP's first loss of the season, dropping to 13-1 overall. Grand Valley State improves to 21-5 on the year.
Each of the Crimson Hawks' doubles losses were tight, while three of their four singles losses came in three sets.
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) dropped the top doubles spot by a close score of 9-8.
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) fell 9-7 at the second spot while
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and
Claudia Menes (Spain/San Eutiquio) lost 8-5 at three.
In singles play, the top two matches were decided in three sets, with Petercakova falling 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 at one and von Agris losing 1-6, 7-5, 10-4 at two. Butland took a hard fought win at No. 3, also a three-setting, defeating Aimee Moccia by a score of 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.
Also scoring a three-set victory was McFail at six, earning a 6-1, 3-6, 10-6 win.
Menes fell at four 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 and Wood dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) decision at five.
The Crimson Hawks have the chance to put this first loss behind them as they play Wayne State (Mich.) on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford.
