INDIANA, Pa. – Senior attacker
Amy Weinberg (Clarksville, Md./Atholton) scored two goals and handed out two assists, but No. 19 IUP couldn't find a tying goal, losing to No. 7 West Chester, 9-8, Saturday afternoon.
At a snowy and windy George P. Miller Stadium, Weinberg's second goal with 3:51 remaining in the game got IUP within one goal of tying West Chester, but the Golden Rams were able to control possession and run out the clock for the rest of the game to move to 12-1 overall and 7-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. IUP drops just its second PSAC game, moving to 8-5 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
The Crimson Hawks got on the scoreboard first with
Tara Nicholas (Germantown, Md./Northwest) scoring from a free position shot, her 11th goal of the season. IUP and West Chester went back-and-forth for most of the first half, with neither team being able to pull away until West Chester went on a late run to head into halftime up, 6-4.
Minutes into the second half, IUP faced its largest deficit of the day, down 8-4, but fought their way back to outscore West Chester 4-1 over the last 21 minutes of the half. Junior
Kim Hooven (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), freshman Adrian Greco and Weinberg each scored two goals, while Nicholas and freshman
Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) added one apiece.
In goal, sophomore
Angela Lontoc (Columbus, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) saved a career-high 13 shots. On the season, she's third in the PSAC in save percentage and fifth in total saves.
IUP returns to action Tuesday in Erie for a showdown with Mercyhurst. Action is set to start at 4 p.m.
