INDIANA, Pa. – Junior
Anthony Glover (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) scored a game-high 20 points to lead the No. 10 IUP men's basketball team to a 78-65 victory over California (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Wednesday night at the Kovalchick Complex.
With the win the Crimson Hawks extend their winning streak to seven games and improve to 16-2 overall and 11-1 in league play. Meanwhile, the Vulcans fall to 5-13 overall behind a 2-10 conference mark.
Glover connected on 8-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Sophomore
Jacobo Diaz (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain/CBA Gran Canaria) added 16 points, nine rebounds and two steals while redshirt junior
Blake Danielak (Georgetown, Tex./Liberty Hill) scored 11 points. Redshirt senior
Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) added 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
IUP jumped out to an early 11-4 lead after a three-pointer from Diaz at the 16:37-mark. Diaz then pushed the lead to 16-7 with another three-pointer nearly a minute later. California then cut the lead to 18-15 at the 11:45-mark after an 8-2 run. A pair of free-throws from senior
Brandon Spain (Baltimore, Md./Glen Burnie) pushed the Crimson Hawks lead to 31-22 late in the first half. A three-pointer from Luka Andjusic pulled the Vulcans to within eight at 35-27 with 3:20 to play in the half.
California cut the lead to 41-36 in the opening minute of the second half on a layup from Tony Richardson. IUP answered with a 7-1 run to extend the lead to 48-37 on a Spain layup at the 16:22-mark. After the Vulcans once gain pulled to within five, the Crimson Hawks answered with a 12-0 run to push the lead to 60-43 midway through the half. The run was highlighted by three-pointers from Diaz, freshman
Malik Miller (Farrell, Pa./Farrell), and a pair of three-pointers from Glover. IUP then extended the lead to 24 (71-47) after a Diaz free-throw at the 7:07-mark before earning the win.
California was led by a team-high 16 points from Richardson as well as 13 points from Andjusic.
IUP shot at a 51.7 percent (31-of-60) clip, including 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from beyond the arc. In comparison, California connected at a 45.3 percent (24-of-53) clip and just 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from three-point range. The Crimson Hawks held a 33-26 rebounding margin
