GREENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Jacobo Diaz (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain/CBA Gran Canaria) scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in leading the sixth-ranked IUP men's basketball team to an 88-73 victory over Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at the McKenna Center on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Crimson Hawks extend their winning streak to nine games and improve to 18-2 overall and 13-1 in PSAC play. The win also clinched a berth in the PSAC tournament for the 30th time in program history. Meanwhile, the Griffins fall to 8-10 overall behind a 5-9 mark in league play.
Diaz was one of four Crimson Hawks to score in double-figures. Junior
Anthony Glover (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) tied a career-high with six three-pointers while scoring 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting (6-of-9 from beyond the arc). Redshirt junior
Blake Danielak (Georgetown, Tex./Liberty Hill) scored 19 points and added five rebounds. Sophomore
Dante Lombardi (Indiana, Pa./The Kiski School) tallied a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 assists.
IUP jumped out to an early 11-7 lead on a three-pointer from Glover at the 16:22-mark. Seton Hill cut the lead to 13-11 on a jumper from Fernando Salsamendi. The Crimson Hawks answered with a 13-6 run to push the lead to 26-17 at the 11:52-mark on a jumper from Diaz. IUP made 5-of-6 shots from the field during the run while forcing two Griffin turnovers. Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) jumper then gave the Crimson Hawks a 38-21 lead at the 7:43-mark before the Crimson Hawks then took a 48-37 halftime lead.
In the second half, Seton Hill cut the IUP lead to 52-49 thanks to a 12-4 run over a 4:40 stretch on a three-pointer from Salsamendi. The Crimson Hawks then extended the lead to 12 (61-49) on Glover's sixth three-pointer at the 13:34-mark. The Griffins answered by cutting the lead to 66-59 on a layup from Spencer Casson midway through the half. IUP then put the game away with a 20-7 run that extended the lead to 86-66 at the 4:16-mark.
IUP shot at a 52.4 percent (33-of-63) clip, including 91.7 percent (11-of-12) from the free-throw line. Seton Hill connected at a 55.2 percent (32-of-58) clip. IUP held a slim 29-28 rebounding margin.
