IUP Women’s Volleyball bounces back with sweep of Edinboro

INDIANA, Pa. – Senior Alexis Anderson (Cleveland, Ohio/Mayfield) and junior Sami Brown (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) each had 12 kills to help lead IUP women's volleyball to a three-set victory over visiting Edinboro on Friday night at the Kovalchick Complex.

Brown hit .280 on the night and added two block assists as the Crimson Hawks improved to 15-6 overall and is now in a four-way tie for the Southwest Division lead with a 6-2 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

The win attempted to erase bad taste of Tuesday's divisional road loss at Clarion, with IUP winning for the sixth time in seven chances at home.

IUP won by scores of 25-21, 29-27 and 25-14. The Crimson Hawks hit .205 and forced Edinboro into 21 hitting errors with the help of 8.0 team blocks on the night. Senior Gabby Egler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Barack Obama Academy) had a solo block and four assists to pace the net defense of the Crimson Hawks. Junior Jess Marut (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) finished with a match-high 14 digs.

Edinboro (13-6, 3-5 PSAC) played the Crimson Hawks tight throughout the first and second sets, as IUP couldn't grab a lead of more than six in the opener. The Fighting Scots led for most of the second set before IUP rallied to tie it up at 21-21, and avoided a setback several times before scoring back-to-back points to take a 2-0 match lead.

The Crimson Hawks dominated the third set by hitting .333 to Edinboro's .097.

Senior Katie Miller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) set the table for Anderson, Brown, and the rest of the IUP offense with 30 assists before sitting out the second half of the third set due to injury. Freshman Dominica Niccolai (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) entered and tallied seven assists in IUP's final 11 points.
