IUP Men’s Hoops outlasts Bowie State for 69-62 road win

BOWIE, Md. – Junior forward Jacobo Diaz (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain/CBA Gran Canaria) led four players in double-figures as IUP men's basketball held off Bowie State for a 69-62 road win at A.C. Jordan Arena on Wednesday night.

Diaz scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, going 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from the foul line in 37 minutes.

Joining Diaz were Dante Lombardi (Indiana, Pa./The Kiski School) and Malik Miller (Farrell, Pa./Farrell) with 12 points each, and Anthony Glover, Jr. (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) with 11 points.

It was the third win in a row for the Crimson Hawks and fourth in the last five games, as they improved to 4-3 on the season.

Bowie State (1-4) led for the first nine minutes until Glover drained a 3-pointer to give the Crimson Hawks a 19-17 lead. That three was part of a 10-0 run for IUP, which took a 24-17 lead when Lombardi sunk a 3-pointer of his own with eight minutes left in the first half.

The Bulldogs did come back to tie things up but the Crimson Hawks took a 34-32 lead into halftime. IUP outshot Bowie 53 percent to 28 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, but the Bulldogs kept it close by converting 10-of-12 from the foul line.

After an early second half bucket gave Bowie State a 39-38 lead, IUP grabbed that lead right back with another 3-pointer by Lombardi and didn't relinquish that advantage for the rest of the night.

The Bulldogs did make it a two-point ballgame with under two minutes to play, but the Crimson Hawks converted from the line when they needed to, making 7-of-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to ice the victory.
