INDIANA, Pa. – For their parts in the Crimson Hawks' NCAA football playoff win on Saturday, redshirt junior quarterback
Lenny Williams, Jr. (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) and sophomore linebacker
Nick Amendola (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) have been named the IUP Athletes of the Week, which were announced by the Sports Information Office on Monday morning.
Williams and Amendola helped top-seeded IUP to a 44-10 blowout win over visiting West Chester in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Division II Championships this past weekend. The Crimson Hawks outgained the fifth-seeded Golden Rams 558 yards to 232 yards, scoring 37 straight points to open the game.
Williams totaled 275 yards and four touchdowns on his own. He completed 13-of-22 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for another 41 yards and a score on 11 carries. The signal caller spread the ball around to five different receivers, connecting on passes of 62, 51 and 49 yards.
It was a monumental weekend for Williams, as he set a new program record for career total yards with 8,131, passing the old record held by Andrew Krewatch of 8,043 total yards.
Amendola posted a team-high 10 tackles as he was one of several contributors to the Crimson Hawks' defensive performance. It was his fourth double-digit tackle effort of the season for the first year starter.
IUP held West Chester to 121 rushing yards on 42 attempts, averaging just 2.9 yards per carry. PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Year Jarel Elder was held to 59 yards rushing, while Golden Rams quarterbacks completed just 9-of-28 passes for 111 yards and were sacked five times.
