INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP women's basketball team pushed its winning streak to seven games with a 79-66 victory over Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday evening at the Kovalchick Complex.
With the win the Crimson Hawks improve to 19-5 overall and 17-3 in PSAC play. Meanwhile, the Griffins fall to 15-12 behind an 11-10 mark in conference play.
Junior
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) scored a game-high 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting while adding four rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. Redshirt sophomore
Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic) added 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore
Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting while adding seven rebounds, four blocks and one steal.
IUP opened the game on a 10-0 run after a three-pointer from Wolosik. Seton Hill answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 10-7 at the 5:10-mark of the first quarter on a jumper from Chrisanna Green. A layup from Appleby gave the Crimson Hawks an 18-10 lead late in the first quarter.
A jumper from Wolosik at the 8:42-mark of the second quarter extended the IUP lead to 24-13. Minutes later the Crimson Hawks pushed the lead to 15 on a layup from Robinson. The Griffins cut the lead to nine (32-23) on a three-pointer from Alexandra Hay at the 3:45-mark. From there, IUP closed the quarter on a 14-8 run to take a 46-31 halftime lead.
In the third quarter the Crimson Hawks quickly pushed the lead to 21 (52-31) on a jumper from Robinson at the 7:49-mark. Later in the quarter a
Maura D'Anna (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) jumper gave IUP a 64-38 lead. The Griffins then cut the lead to 69-48 on a layup from Hay at the 6:08-mark of the fourth quarter. After a
Kendall Hunter (Burke, Va. /Paul VI Catholic) free-throw gave IUP a 24-point lead Seton Hill answered with a 16-2 run over a four-minute stretch to pull to within 10 (74-64) at the 1:20-mark. The Griffins were not able to pull any closer as the Crimson Hawks sealed the win.
IUP shot at a 40.3 percent (29-of-72) clip, including 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from beyond the arc. In comparison, Seton Hill shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the floor and just 33.3 percent (8-of-24) from three-point range. IUP held a slim 44-43 rebounding margin.
Hay led the Griffins with 17 points while Jenna Kaufman added 15 points. Halie Torris added 10 points.
