HAMPTON, Va. – After a rough first game, IUP baseball bounced back with a 7-0 win over Bloomsburg on the second day of the Apprentice School's Builder Invitational. The Crimson Hawks dropped Friday's opening game 14-3 to the College of St. Joseph (Vt.).
Three IUP pitchers combined for the game two shutout, with senior righty
Dillon Swanger (Salisbury, Md./James Bennett) earning the win in three innings of relief. Swanger struck out two and gave up three hits after sophomore starter
Jeff Allen (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area) struck out eight in five innings. Senior left hander
Dan Roan (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) closed out Bloomsburg in the ninth, fanning the final batter to give IUP head coach
Anthony Rebyanski his first career collegiate victory.
The Crimson Hawks (1-2) did all of their scoring in the final three innings, including a five-run eighth inning. Freshman
Bo Putt (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) drove in IUP's first run in the seventh, while classmate
Tyler Adams (Vinco, Pa./Central Cambria) and junior
Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler) each drove in a pair of runs in the eighth. A double steal in the ninth gave IUP its final run, with freshman
Chris Eisel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) crossing home.
Wheeler had a team-best four hits on the afternoon, including three against Bloomsburg. The Crimson Hawks had 16 total base hits while also drawing 10 walks.
In the day's first game, IUP scored two in the third and one in the fourth to tie things up a 3-3. St. Joseph then scored five runs in each of the next two innings, en route to the 11-run victory.
