Crimson Hawks suffer 80-64 setback at No. 3 California

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Sophomore Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) and redshirt sophomore Lauren Wolosik (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Catholic) combined for 35 points as the IUP women's basketball team fell to third-ranked California (PA), 80-64 on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at the Convocation Center.

With the loss, the Crimson Hawks finish the regular season at 20-6 overall and 18-4 in PSAC play. IUP will be the No. 2 seed from the PSAC West in next week's PSAC tournament and receives a first-round bye. Meanwhile, the Vulcans improve to 26-2 overall and 20-2 in league play. California earned the No. 1 seed from the PSAC West.

Appleby scored a team-high 18 points on 8-of-17 shooting to go along with three assists. Wolosik scored 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting (3-of-6 from beyond the arc) while totaling six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Sophomore Brittany Robinson (Harrisburg, Pa. /Central Dauphin East) added 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting with five rebounds and two steals.

IUP jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the first quarter after a jumper from Appleby at the 7:22-mark. The Crimson Hawks wasted no time in extending the lead as IUP went on a 7-2 run to push the lead to 13-4 after Appleby converted a three-point play midway through the quarter. A three-pointer from Wolosik gave the Crimson Hawks a 22-8 lead with just over one-minute left in the first quarter.

California cut the lead to 10 (24-14) at the 7:40-mark of the second quarter after a three-pointer from Miki Glenn. IUP then pushed the lead to 30-16 midway through the quarter after a layup from Wolosik. Near the end of the quarter Wolosik extended the lead to 38-22 before the Crimson Hawks took a 38-24 halftime lead.

The Vulcans used a 12-3 run to begin the third quarter as California cut the IUP lead to 41-36 at the 7:29-mark. A jumper from Glenn midway through the period tied the game at 44-44. A pair of free-throws from Robinson tied the game at 48-48 at the 2:54-mark. The Vulcans then closed the third quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 58-50 lead.

A Robinson layup at the 8:32-mark of the fourth quarter pulled the Crimson Hawks to within 62-54. California then went up 14 (68-54) after a pair of free-throws from Seairra Barrett. After a Wolosik layup cut the lead to 68-59, the Vulcans finished the game on a 12-5 run to seal the win.

IUP shot at a 44.3 percent (27-of-61) clip, including 51.5 percent (17-of-33) in the second half. In comparison, California shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the floor.

Glenn led all scorers with a game-high 29 points.

The Crimson Hawks open PSAC tournament play on Wednesday, March 1 in the quarterfinals at home against the Mercyhurst/Clarion first-round winner. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
