WILLIAMSTON, N.C. – IUP baseball closed out its weekend series with No. 14 Millersville, falling in both ends of a Sunday doubleheader at Barnes Field. The Crimson Hawks lost by scores of 14-0 and 1-0 today, and dropped all three games in the series.
IUP's record is now 3-9 heading into Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West divisional play next weekend. Millersville improved its record to 14-4 on the year.
The Marauders totaled 14 hits in the opener, as they did their damage in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Of Millersville's seven runs in the fourth, just two were earned as the Crimson Hawks committed three errors.
Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler),
Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York),
Scott Hess (Erie, Pa./Erie Cathedral Prep) and
Nate Dickey (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) each collected hits for IUP in game one.
The IUP pitching bounced back in a big way in game two, as starter
Colin Claus (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) struck out five and gave up just two hits and one run in five innings of work.
Millersville's only run came in the first inning on an RBI single by the second batter. Claus overcame two steals and an error in the inning to strike out the final batter and leave a pair stranded.
Brian Albert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and
Christian McClure (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) combined to toss the bottom of the sixth, striking out one and giving up one hit.
The Crimson Hawks totaled three hits and stranded three runners, including the potential tying run on second base in the fourth inning.
Up next
IUP was scheduled to play West Liberty on Tuesday afternoon, but that doubleheader will be postponed due to scheduling conflicts in the Mountain East Conference. The Crimson Hawks will open divisional play against Mercyhurst on Friday in Erie.
