SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior shortstop Hanna Mercer was a combined 3-for-6 as the IUP softball team was swept by Shippensburg in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon losing 2-0 and 6-3.
With the losses, the Crimson Hawks fall to 8-9 overall on the season. Meanwhile, the Raiders improve to 15-8 this season.
In game one, the game remained scoreless into the third inning before Shippensburg plated two runs on a wild pitch and a single up the middle. IUP threatened in the top of the fifth when it loaded the bases on a single from
Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights). Freshman
Megan Little (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) then grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Goetz was 2-for-3 while
Mackenna Miller (Milton, Pa. /Milton) was 1-for-3 and
Alaina Montgomery (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) was 1-for-1. Starting pitcher
Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) suffered the loss after striking out seven in six innings of work.
In game two, Shippensburg jumped out to a quick 2-0 in the bottom of the first on a Chloe Collins home run. IUP then cut the lead in half in the when sophomore
Laura Cotter (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) doubled in Montgomery from second. The Raiders answered by scoring three runs in the bottom half of the second to take a 5-1 lead. A Mercer solo home run cut the lead to 5-2 in the fifth. After Shippensburg pushed the lead to 6-2 in the sixth IUP then cut the lead in half in the top of the seventh on a
Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School) single.
Mercer finished 3-for-4 with two runs, a home run and an RBI. Cotter was 2-for-3 with an RBI while
Kassie Kesneck (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) was also 2-for-3. Starting pitcher
Amanda Spindler (Brownsburg, Ind./Cathedral) suffered the loss after allowing four runs in 1.1 innings.
