WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The IUP baseball team earned a split of its double-header with Winston-Salem State on Saturday earning an 8-3 win in game one followed by a 3-2 loss in game two.
With the split the Crimson Hawks move to 3-4 overall this season. Meanwhile the Rams move to 6-11 on the season.
IUP jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of game one as Hess drew a bases-loaded walk to start the scoring. The Crimson Hawks then added runs on two singles, a walk, and a ground out. IUP then added two insurance runs in the fourth before the Rams got on the board in the bottom of the sixth.
Chris Eisel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double in the first game.
Ted DeSanti (Erie, Pa./Erie Cathedral Prep) drove in two runs while going 1-for-5.
Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler),
Scott Hess (Erie, Pa./Erie Cathedral Prep) and
Wes Carson (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge) each scored two runs in the win.
Jeff Allen (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area) earned the win by tossing five scoreless innings while striking out six and scattering four hits.
In game two Winston-Salem State took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third before IUP cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth on an error. The Rams then built a 3-1 lead on a Brandon Ford single to center before Eisel singled in the sixth to cut the lead to 3-2.
Hess was 2-for-3 while Eisel was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Wheeler scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Dan Sepic (York, Pa./Central York) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Colin Claus (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) suffered the loss after throwing 4.2 innings and allowing three runs on four hits despite striking out seven.
