AKRON, Ohio – The 35th-ranked IUP women's tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches with a 5-4 victory over 47th-ranked Grand Valley State in non-conference play at Towpath Tennis Center on Saturday.
With the win, the Crimson Hawks improve to 11-4 on the season. Meanwhile, the Lakers fall to 19-8 overall.
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset, U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and
Katya Minchenkova (Mytishchi, Russia/Secondary School No.12) tied the match at 1-1 after their 8-6 win over Abby Perkins and Livia Christman at No. 3 singles. IUP then took a 2-1 lead after
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) earned an 8-5 win at No. 1 singles over Madi Ballard and Rachel Sumner.
Aimee Moccia tied the match with a straight-sets win at fourth singles before IUP Petercakova recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ballard at No. 1 singles. Ballard is currently 11th in the Midwest region. The Crimson Hawks then took a 4-2 lead after a
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) defeated Perkins 6-4, 6-4. Minchenkova then sealed the win with a 6-4, 6-3 over Christman at fifth singles.
