INDIANA, Pa. – 35th-ranked IUP women's tennis soared to their third straight shutout with a 9-0 win over visiting West Virginia State on Senior Day at the Maple Street Courts.
Before the start of the match, seniors
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset, U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School),
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) were honored.
The Crimson Hawks improved to 16-5 overall while West Virginia State is now 12-8. It was also IUP's fourth win over an NCAA regionally-ranked team this season. It was IUP's final tune-up prior to the 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships next week.
IUP easily swept doubles, including wins of 8-2 by Jarka Petercakova and
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) at No. 1; 8-4 by Gonzalez and Wood at No. 2; and 8-1 by Butland and Katya Minchenkova at No. 3.
IUP also shined in singles play, with six two-set victories. The 6-1, 6-4 win by von Agris at No. 2 came over Laura Isbey, the reigning Mountain East Conference Player of the Year and fourth-ranked player in the Atlantic Region. Petercakova also took down a regionally-ranked opponent, defeating Kierstin Hensley (No. 13) by a score of 6-2, 6-3.
Other single winners included Raquel Gonalez at No. 3 6-1, 6-0; Minchenkova 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4, Wood 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5; and Butland 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
Up next
IUP will host the quarterfinals of the 2017 PSAC Championships on Tuesday afternoon. The No. 2 seed in the Western Division, IUP will either play Edinboro or Seton Hill.
