IUP Softball stays hot with doubleheader sweep at Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Mackenna Miller (Milton, Pa. /Milton) and Hannah Mercer (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) each tallied four hits on Monday as IUP softball swept Seton Hill on the road, winning by scores of 7-3 and 5-4.

It was the second sweep in the last three days for the Crimson Hawks, who have now won seven of their last eight games dating back to last Monday. IUP also extended its win streak to five straight, the longest of the year, and improved to 17-14 overall.

Miller picked up two hits in each game, including a double in the opener. Mercer had her fourth three-hit outing of the year with a 3-for-3 performance in the nightcap, while also driving home a run on a sacrifice fly.

Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) picked up her sixth win of the year in the circle, striking out five and giving up just three hits and no runs in 5.1 innings of work in the game one victory. Macy Mularski (Irwin, Pa./Yough High School) was credited with the game two victory, giving up two earned runs on six hits in 4.1 innings.

IUP takes advantages of errors in 7-3 game one win
The Crimson Hawks did nearly all of their damage in the fourth and fifth innings, plating three runs in each to take a 6-0 lead. Laura Cotter (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Miller each had two-out singles, while two Seton Hill errors helped IUP get on the board in the fourth.

Kassie Kesneck (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) responded to her PSAC Central Hitter of the Week snub with a two-out double in the fifth that drove in two runs, giving IUP its 6-0 lead. A Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School) sac fly in the sixth acted as an insurance run, as IUP gave up three in the bottom half but still came away with the easy win.

IUP hangs on in game two
Seton Hill matched two of IUP's two-run innings in game two, but a sac fly from Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona) in the fifth served as the deciding run. The Crimson Hawks took advantage of one of Seton Hill's three errors with a pair of runs in the first, only to have the Griffins tie things up in the second.

After Parrish's RBI in the fifth, the Crimson Hawks added a pair in the sixth on another error and Mercer's sac fly. Seton Hill capitalized on a pair of IUP errors in the bottom half to score two runs, but reliever Megan Risinger (Creekside, Pa./Marion Center) got out of trouble and finished off the win.

Up next
The Crimson Hawks head to Erie for two against Mercyhurst on Wednesday. They return to PSAC Central play on Friday with a home two-game set against Bloomsburg.
