Strong hitting, pitching performances pace IUP Softball to doubleheader sweep at Clarion

CLARION, Pa. – Sophomore outfielder Laura Cotter (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) paced the IUP softball team to a doubleheader sweep at Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central play, winning 9-0 in game one and 9-3 in game two on Saturday afternoon.

With the sweep, the Crimson Hawks improve to 21-16 overall and 10-6 in PSAC play. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 6-38 overall behind a 2-14 mark in league play.

IUP jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. The inning was highlighted by Cotter's two-run home run to left field. The Crimson Hawks added single runs in both the second and third to extend the lead to 6-0 on an error and a Kaitlyn Beers (Reynoldsville, Pa./DuBois Area High School) sacrifice fly. IUP then added three unearned runs in the seventh to provide the winning margin.

Cotter finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, a home run and a walk. Mackenna Miller (Milton, Pa. /Milton) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) (1-for-3) and Hanna Mercer (1-for-4) each scored two runs.

Crimson Hawks starter Lauren Zola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) earned the win after tossing 6.0 innings. She scattered three hits while striking out four.

In game two Clarion took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Alexis Boie scored from third as Laura Sadowski stole second. It remained 1-0 until IUP struck for four runs in the top of the fourth. Amanda Parrish (Dysart, Pa./Altoona) connected for a run scoring single. Cotter delivered an RBI single to center before Megan Risinger (Creekside, Pa./Marion Center) tallied an RBI single down the left field line that scored Cotter. Alaina Laverick (Clymer, Pa./Penns Manor) then singled down the left field line that scored Risinger. The Crimson Hawks then added five insurance runs in the top of the seventh on singles from Mercer and Parrish as well as an error.

Mercer was 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and a double. Parrish finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Lauren Goetz (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) was 2-for-4 with a run. Cotter finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

Risinger, who started the game, earned the win after pitching 6.0 innings. She scattered three hits and struck out six while allowing just one earned run.

The Crimson Hawks continue PSAC play on Saturday, April 28 when they travel to Mansfield for doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
