WASHINGTON, Pa. – The IUP baseball team recorded a doubleheader split of California (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play this afternoon at Wild Things Park, losing 5-4 before winning 6-2.
With the split, the Crimson Hawks move to 18-22 overall and 14-10 in PSAC play. Meanwhile, the Vulcans move to 20-24 overall behind an 11-13 mark in league play.
In game one, IUP took a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first. The Crimson Hawks scored the first run when
Cory Wheeler (Butler, Pa./Butler) scored on a failed pickoff attempt. Three batters later
Scott Hess (Erie, Pa./Erie Cathedral Prep) delivered an RBI single that scored Sepic.
Matt Eperesi (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Mars) followed with a two-run single to left that pushed the lead to 4-0. California answered back in the bottom half of the inning as the Vulcans plated three runs on David Marcus single, a Chris Wastchak double and a groundout. The game remained 4-3 until the bottom of the fifth when California scored two unearned runs on an error to earn the win.
Wheeler was 2-for-3 with a run while Hess was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Sepic finished 1-for-3 with a run while Eperesi was also 1-for-3.
IUP starting pitcher MikeKlingensmith suffered the loss after pitching 6.0 innings while scattering seven hits and allowing three earned runs. Joe Yourgal went 6.0 innings in relief to earn the win for the Vulcans.
The Crimson Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a double by Carson drove in
Nate Dickey (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) from first base. In the top of the fourth, IUP pushed the lead to 3-0 on a two-out two-run double to right center from Hess. California cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom half of the fourth on a Garrett Brooks single up the middle. The Vulcans then pulled to within 3-2 in the fifth when Kristian Webb delivered an RBI single up the middle. The Crimson Hawks then added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Chris Eisel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) drove in Eperesi from second on a single to right. Two batters later Wheeler tripled to right center which drove in Dickey and Eisel.
Sepic was 2-for-4 while
Anthony Rigous (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) was 2-for-3. Hess finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and a double. Carson was 1-for-3 with a run scored, RBI and a double. Wheeler was 1-for-3 with two RBI, a triple and a walk.
Christian McClure (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) earned the win after tossing 2.1 innings in relief while striking out one and allowing just one run.

The Crimson Hawks travel to Lock Haven for a mid-week non-conference contest against the Bald Eagles. The game was originally scheduled for April 25 but was postponed due to inclement weather. First pitch for the single 9-inning game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
