GREENSBURG, Pa. – IUP women's tennis continues its championship season as the Crimson Hawks defeated West Virginia State 5-0 on Tuesday night to advance to the program's seventh straight NCAA Division II round of 16 appearance.
The match was played indoors at the Greensburg Racquet Club, as wet and windy weather forced all action this weekend inside.
Results
IUP (20-5) entered the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships as the top overall seed, earning a first round bye before breezing through today's victory. West Virginia State defeated Edinboro 5-2 on Monday to advance to the second round.
The victory extended IUP's regional championship win streak to 13 dating back to the 2011 season. It's also the eighth straight win for the Crimson Hawks this season.
The Crimson Hawks will be making their seventh straight appearance at the final NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships site. They'll face Midwestern State (22-4), the second seed out of the South Central Region, in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
Hot doubles start
IUP cruised through doubles play, with
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) leading off with an 8-2 win at No. 2.16th-ranked
Jarka Petercakova (Bratislava, Slovakia/Sport Gymnasium) and
Luise von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) followed with an 8-2 victory at No. 1, with
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset, U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) and
Katya Minchenkova (Mytishchi, Russia/Secondary School No.12) scored an 8-3 win at No. 3 to give the Crimson Hawks a 3-0 lead heading to singles.
Minchenkova clinches the match
To open singles play, Wood picked up a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 spot. Minchenkova then followed with the match-clincher, winning 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.

The Crimson Hawks will face Midwestern State, the 15th-ranked team in the nation, on Wednesday, May 10 at 12 p.m. in Atlamonte Springs, Fla.
