EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Despite a late comeback attempt in the final minutes, the season ended for IUP women's lacrosse with an 11-9 loss to East Stroudsburg in the semifinals of the 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson Hawks scored three goals over a 2:16 time span, turning an 11-6 deficit into an 11-9 one with just over two minutes to play in the game.
After
Ally Burrows (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) scored to make it a two-goal game, East Stroudsburg secured the ensuing draw control and ran out the time to clinch the win and move onto Sunday's championship game.
IUP ends its season with an 11-7 overall record, tying for second in the PSAC standings with a 9-3 league record and earning the fourth seed in the conference tournament. It was the Crimson Hawks fourth trip to the PSAC semifinals in the last five years.
The top seed in the tournament, East Stroudsburg will play Mercyhurst for the PSAC Championship.
Burrows led IUP's scoring effort with two goals and a season-high three assists.
Katie Martyn (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and
Kim Hooven (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) also tallied two goals.
The Crimson Hawks held a 12-10 advantage in draw controls, with Hooven and Martyn each collecting four.
Carissa Smith (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) had two draw controls to go with game-highs of five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
IUP made an early statement, taking a 3-0 lead at the midway point of the second half on goals by Burrows,
Lauren Robinson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck High) and Hooven. East Stroudsburg (16-2) rallied to tie the game, scoring three times in the final 10 minutes of the half.
Adriana Greco (Sound Beach, N.Y./Rocky Point) gave IUP a 4-3 lead just nine seconds into the second half, but the Warriors scored four of the next five to take a 7-5 lead with 23:15 to play. Hooven stopped the ESU scoring run with a goal at 19:50, but the Warriors put a near lock on the game with for straight goals over five minutes to take the 11-6 lead with 12:10 on the clock.
Angela Lontoc (Columbus, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) held the high-scoring Warriors to 11 goals by posting 14 saves, her sixth straight 10-save outing.
